A Dropout Teaches Himself is the English rendition of Padma Shri Binode Kanungo’s memoir originally written in Odia, entitled Paatha Pachhe Pachhe Apathuaa. Although Shri Binode Kanungo left school after Class IX, he remained an avid learner throughout his life. His studies inside different jails, especially the medical studies; reading the dictionary, incurring loans from the kabuliwallahs at exorbitant rates of interest, experiences in agriculture, apiculture and cattle breeding; world vision; necessity of instilling strength in the language, etc., are encapsulated in chapters that are delightful to read. The entire book is packed with stuff interesting enough to hold the reader spellbound. The author puts maximum emphasis on human excellence and dissemination of knowledge.
