The authors in this particular study take up a very interesting field of enquiry which focusses on certain endemic economic transactions. This unit of transaction, known as 'tea token', was used as a local currency within a vicinity of tea gardens in Assam, which is the major state in the constellation of present eight states in North-East India. Assam was also considered as the gateway to this entire spatial existence since the colonial time. The book is an excellent study of the tea tokens that begins with the discovery of tea plants and the beginning and growth of tea gardens, discusses the economic conditions, means of communication and immigrations of tea labour, tea in other parts of the world and the eye-catching advertising, and thereafter, makes an in-depth study of the contemporary coinage, coins and tokens, particularly the tea garden tokens, and finally, ends with a catalogue of the tea tokens of Assam, North Bengal and South India.
