Today's Punjab is the story of farmers suicide, youth unemployment, stagnating agricultural productivity, rising cost of production in agriculture, decelerating income, shrinking employment rising indebtedness and ecological imbalances. Punjab is fast falling into the category of middle income Indian states. Therefore Punjab agriculture needs to be reoriented away from being India's food basket to more pertinent issues of agriculture diversification, agriculture credit market, agriculture extension, supply chain infrastructure and sustainable agriculture policies. The problem of agrarian crisis is not only state specific but it encompasses the whole of Indian economy. For inclusive growth, Government of India has announced to double farmers income by 2022 so as to provide income security to farmers in time bound manner. For this purpose there is a need to create enabling environment to include various aspects of productivity growth, agriculture diversification, reducing cost of production in agriculture and providing appropriate prices for farm products, promotion of allied agricultural activities and non-farm employment opportunities. For addressing the issue of agrarian crisis, comprehensive policies are required for sustainable agriculture and overall development. This book coveres broad spectrum of issues relating to agriculture, rural industrialization, rural indebtedness and vision of agriculture for 2022 and bring out important conclusions and implications.
