About the Book
This book is about the historic city of Jaipur, the pink-city of India. It is a unique city designed and established by Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 A.D. The grandeur blue print of this walled city has largely remained unchanged until now, even after 293 years. Despite various ups and downs the city continued to flourish as a trade and religious centre till mid of 20th century. Jai-Nagar, stamped as the World Heritage City by UNSECO, was fabricated in a blooming and charming architecture style, which is unique in many senses. It is a testimony of the intellect of Sawai Jai Singh and his successors. It is their inherent passion for art and architecture which unfolds into the magnificent buildings of this walled city. The book will explore the palaces, havelis, temples, gardens, kharkhanas, bawaris, streets, mohallas, etc. of walled city, along with the forts in its vicinity. It is an attempt to bring forward the Rajput architectural features in them, and also highlight the impact of Mughal architecture. In fact, in Jaipur, the regional art and architectural traditions of Rajputs perfectly blended with the Mughal architectural traditions, and emerged as Dhoondhari style of architecture.
