About the Book
Caste, Class and Gender in Modern Indian Literature is a collection of critical essays that examine multiple intersections and interjections of gender with other identities within the Indian social framework. Referencing such iconic works from Indian literature as Mahasweta Devi's Breast Stories, Ismat Chughtai's Lihaaf and Amrita Pritam's Pinjar among others - the book attempts an engaging discourse on the issues of Dalits, women, tribals and the under-privilegedsections of the society. Framed together, these essays explore texts from English and Indian regional languages to investigate ways in which class, caste and gender are challenged or negotiated within established narratives and social contexts.
