About the Book
Historic gardens are an important and valuable part of our heritage. While in the recent past there has been concern expressed towards the conservation of historic buildings, this has unfortunately not been echoed in the case of historic gardens. Gardens have been generally treated as appendages to and surroundings of historic sites and not as important entities in their own right. This publication, in using the Articles of the Florence Charter on Historic gardens as a frame of reference, seeks to create awareness on the need to conserve historic gardens in India and through their conservation illustrates how they can be seamlessly woven with the lives of the people today. In its focus on the Indian context, however it is both an explanation, an expansion and adaptation of the Florence Charter on Historic gardens, as the discipline of heritage management, which also includes management of historic gardens, and has evolved substantially over the last three decades, from when the Florence Charter was first drafted. Its aim is to share and draw lessons from this experience to help inform the practice of conservation of historic gardens in India in a rapidly developing field of heritage conservation.
