DHAROHAR*- Costumes and Accessories in the collection of Kelkar Museum The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is the one-man collection of about 21,000 priceless artifacts by Padmashree Late Dr. D.G. Kelkar (1896-1990) which mirror the everyday life of India. Along with other artifacts like writing instruments, coins, nut crackers, musical instruments, etc., the museum also houses a vivid collection of Paithanis and Chandrakala from Maharashtra, Parsi garas, Banarasi weaves, Rabari garments from Kutch and Gujarat, ‘Kantha’ creations etc. This book features the traditional costumes of men, women and children along with the saris, patkas, sashes and dupattas along with personal and home accessories as well as animal trappings in the collection of the museum. This book showcases the apparel and accessories in the collection of Kelkar museum specifically from DHAROHAR is also different as it carries lot of information on the textiles and crafts from western region. Generally museums have collection of garments donated by rich people and are rich in terms of fabric; details and surface ornamentation .The collection of these garments belong to a middle class and have basic material like cotton and ornamented with the basic material which belonged to this class. So these garments signify their socio-economic cultural background of their wearers. The book also provides glimpses of modest yet elegant Kelkar museum with Maharashtrian Architecture, the highlight of which is room of Mastani Mahal which has been shifted from Kothrud, Pune to this museum. It also shows the other artefacts available and also interiors of the museum which are evident in the introductory chapters of the book.
About the Author: Sonika Soni Khar
Sonika Soni Khar has been involved in design education, practice and research for more than 16 years. She joined Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID) as one of the founder member in 2005 and was involved in curriculum and infrastructure development, faculty appointments, trainings, library resourcing and other developmental activities. In 2014, she joined Pearl Academy as Associate Professor where she is involved in various academic and research-related activities.
Sanjeevani Ayachit
Upon completing her Masters in Clothing and Textiles from the reputed M.S. University of Baroda, Sanjeevani Ayachit took up employment at the prestigious men’s apparel company Raymond Apparel Ltd., Thane. After spending about three years at RAL, she moved to Pune where she took up a teaching position at the S. N. D. T College of Home Science which was followed by three years of teaching fashion design at a private fashion institute. She has also served as Manager – Quality Control at a Pune based apparel brand. In 2009, Sanjeevani joined Symbiosis Institute of Design as an Associate Professor in the Fashion department. She has taught a wide variety of subjects ranging from Design Process, Design Thinking, Fashion Design Projects, History of Indian Garments, Heritage Indian Textiles etc.
