About the Book
Caste represents a cultural and social institution. In the broader pan-Indian society, caste as the functional and cultural institution revolves around its essential and ideal features which include hereditary status, occupational specialization, endogamy, no mobility, purity and pollution and dharma-karma. Despite the fact that Islam rejects completely the caste system in society, it exists in the Kashmiri society and stands functional. Though the caste plays certain role in the Kashmiri society, not a single academic study about this phenomenon has been carried out so far. It was essentially in this context that this book was written with the objective of presenting castes in Kashmir as it exists and functions with authentic empirical evidence. This effort doesn't justify the caste as a system of stratification but presents it as the existential reality in the valley. It specifically deals with the nature, dimensions, theories and multi-faceted features of caste in Kashmir. It represents a system of established stratification on the criteria of caste. This study focuses on static and dynamic aspects of caste; processes of Sayyization, politicization and modernization of caste; role of caste in social, cultural, economic, demographic, educational and employment fields. Finally, the book presents a directory of about 3,000 caste names and family titles used in Kashmir in the present-day times with 12 prominent sociological variables like ritual status, social-economic status, origin, location, occupation, endogamous-exogamous character, inherited/adopted title and similarity/dissimilarity with Kashmiri Pandit castes. It provides details about sources from which these names/titles have been derived and methodology adopted in the process. This book stands as the first academic effort to explain/analyse the caste in the Kashmir valley. Many such efforts must follow for getting sproper and deeper understanding of this phenomenon.
