Vegetables are essential and increasingly popular component of human diets. Collectively, vegetable crops are a major part of agricultural commerce. The vegetables industry produces large volumes of high quality commodities that are intensely marketed and can be delivered locally and regionally or shipped internationally. The diseases that affect vegetables compromise such quality and therefore are of great importance to grower, shipper, marketer and consumer. The importance of cultural, mechanical, physical and biological controls in a particular pest situation depends largely on the economics of the crop, goals of the grower, and plant environment. The present book describes the diseases of important vegetable crops, descriptions of the disease causing agents, suggested strategies for identifying and diagnosing vegetable diseases, and general control measures including resistant varieties, fungicides, crop rotation and seed treatment.
