This study is a rewarding attempt to find out the relevance and significance of Harold Pinter’s plays to the contemporary society. Many of his plays inquire into the phenomenal changes that have overtaken man-woman relationships in our times. In spite of all the labels stuck on him by different critics and scholars, Pinter boldly announces that he is “a very traditional playwright” and his plays reflect the erosion of human values which is ubiquitous and conspicuous in the system of marriage and even ordinary friendships. He is a class by himself but his concerns are about fundamental human emotions and impulses, instincts and situations. He analyses the intricacies and subtleties of human relationships as reflected in the lived reality of our times. Though the means of communication and travel have widened, the mind of the modern man is getting parochial and ego-centric as powerfully delineated by this Nobel laureate. This study attempts to explore the value of Pinter’s plays as valid and valuable social documents.
