Disaster management occupies an important place in this country’s policy framework as it is the poor and the under-privileged who are worst affected on account of calamities. India has been traditional vulnerable to the natural disasters on the account of unique geo-climatic conditions. Floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes and landslides would have been a recurrent phenomena. The record of Indian society as a whole has been quite dismal as far as disaster relief and managing the situation arising in the wake of a calamity is concerned. The national and state governments carry out most of the brunt and coordination for disaster relief. It is in this area that India needs improvement in its approach and handling of disaster like situations. National Disaster Management Authority is an agency, whose primary purpose is to coordinate response to natural or man-made disasters.
