About the Book

The book Global Art of Modern Indian Painters to bring the notice of the World. There is an absence of awareness of India's postwar art in other countries. Scholars during the British rule acknowledged the glory of Art in Ancient and Medieval India for its aesthetic contribution. They spread its knowledge in Western countries. Subjects of Indology and Ancient Indian Art began to be taught and continue to be taught in many Universities and the schools of art in Europe and America. But there are hardly any courses offered about modern art of India. Western art scholars have not studied Indian Modern Art even through there was notworthy deveopment of of art in India keeping pace with other parts of the World. We placed Indian art against the art in Europe and America to find that while it is true that Europe had a head start over India in art education, but now India has raced ahead in this field. Indian art stands out with the best in the World. The significant period of change in Modern Indian Art was from 1940s to 1980s. The artist in this period worked for founding the identity of art of Indian paintings in independent India. They produced extraordinary work. One is impressed seeing the modern art paintings of accomplished individual artists. But the impact is multiplied manifold when we put their work together in one place. We found that the combined body of paintings of the post-war Indian artists is a giant, unique and insightful contribution to the art knowledge of the World. We thought that we should document this discovery and feature the top artists together in an illustrative picture book. We decided to present the work of thirty top painters of India in one book, to show the conbined impact of their work. Contents: Acknowledgements, Preface, 1. Introduction, 2.
