About the Book

A popular story about Nanda Lal Bose (1882-1966) unfolds with his being presented a thirty-year old bonsai plant by his mentor and guru, Abanindranath Tagore, while he was leaving Calcutta for Santiniketan to take up the post of head of Kala Bhavan, Nandalal broke the pot and planted the tree in the grounds of Santiniketan. Eventually, the ornamental tree found its roots and grew robustly. Famously dadvising his students to sketch a tree from roots upwards and not from leaves downwards for trees grow from the roots, Nandalal was deeply connec ted to nature. His art under went dramatic changes as he realized that all vital forms of art are born out of intimacy with nature. The range of Nandalal's artistic expression is seen in his landscapes with human figures, his varied images of nature, and his Santiniketan murals.
