Northeast of India with the hydro-power potential of more than 50.000 MW is considered the powerhouse for India and Southeast Asia. Arunachal Pradesh is its Centre. Similarly, bordering as it does on three countries, defence gets high priority in Arunachal. Most displacement in the state is in these two categories and for transport. Land is taken over under the individual ownership based formal land laws though its people manage their land according to their community-based customary law. Both the priority areas of land acquisition and the interface of the formal and customary laws have serious implications on life and livelihood of the people of the state. An effort was made in the study on which this book is based, to take a look at the processes and implications of land acquisition for the people of Arunachal that does not have either the Fifth or Sixth schedule, in spite of being a tribal majority state.
