This exercise to explore the history of the colour blue in India and the world was prompted by its seemingly universal value. An aspect of blue that is intentionally omitted from this essay is its association with sadness and death. The allegory does not hold up in the Indian context and, in any case, the colour's divine and regal significance overtakes any passing reference to morbidity.
