About the Book
This paper draws a picture of the cultural process in the Arkavathi Valley, particularly at Nagamangala, to understand the subsistence pattern in the region, which shows indications of both agriculture and iron production. Data accumulated through explorations include botanical evidence, iron implements, iron smelting evidence, ceramics with graffiti, and Megalithic burials from the sites under consideration. Three burial clusters are significant among the five localities surveyed. They are burials with two types of portholes in a single burial complex in a forested landscape. An iron sickle, typically indicative of agricultural activities, was found in a burial context. New iron smelting localities were also identified. Similarities can be noticed in the graffiti, ceramics and iron implements in this cluster site and the Megalithic remains at Vittalapura, Brahmagiri, Savanadurga (Karnataka) and Sanuru (Tamil Nadu). The present study was conducted to identify the technological aspects in the construction of Megaliths in the Nagamangala and Katamanadoddi region in the Arkavathi valley.
