In an era of globalization, technology advancement and the competition, it is critical for any organization to change, diversify and adapt to the newer requirements in the sector it specializes so as to remain relevant for the emerging societal needs. Change is inevitable and demands that the organization reorient, reinvent and reinforce itself so as to stay vibrant for the purpose it was created. The change process succeeds smoothly with the dynamic desired leadership and help and contributions by diverse human resources within the organization. ‘Leadership’ is an important feature of organizational affairs. It entails a complex process by which a leader creates an enabling environment and influences others to accomplish the organization’s mission, objectives, tasks and directs organization to be more structured, logical, interconnected as well as organized. Leader as a facilitator, mentor, catalyst, motivator and coach charts the course, provides direction, improves performances, ensures that human resources within the organization contribute to their fullest potential. The Forest Department (FD) in different States/ Union Territories of India is the nodal organization which acts as the custodian of natural ecosystems including diverse forests those cover nearly 24% geographical area of the country. The FD has been assigned the mandate of conservation of biodiversity besides ensuring provision of multiple benefits to human well-being while fulfilling national and global commitments on the sustainable development. In past century or so, the scope of forestry has dramatically changed, enlarged and adopted newer, participatory management approaches. In the changing scenario, management of forests and other natural ecosystems in human dominated landscapes is a daunting task and it calls for effective leadership at all hierarchical levels within the FDs.
