About the Book

At the Ramana Maharishi Ashram in Tiruvannamalai, Uma, a woman in her mid- fifties, meets Maya, a woman in her late twenties. It is the story of their friendship as Maya tries to make a fresh beginning in life. Many, many years ago, Uma had lost her two-year old girl-child to illness and death, however the memory of that grievous loss comes back to her with the same searing intensity time and again. Maya is also going through her own challenge. She is struggling to let go of the memory of a man she loved but chose not to marry because of irreconcilable differences in perspective. Uma, who has lived in Hyderabad, moves to Vancouver with her husband. She begins to consider Maya as a daughter and writes to her at length about her experiences – the people she meets, the places she sees, the books and art she experiences, and so on. Maya meets Ram at Ramanasramam. In his mid forties, he has been living at the Ashram for quite a few years now and volunteers his services at the Ashram's bookstore. He becomes Maya's friend and mentor. As for Uma, her friendship with Maya gives her a sense of purpose and calm. Uma moves to Vientiane, Laos, after three years of stay in Vancouver and also writes to Maya about her move and her travels in that beautiful, unfamiliar country. Will Maya’s appreciation of Ram’s emotional counsel and spiritual guidance lead to a different kind of bond between them? Will Uma consider Sri M or Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, or Sathya Sai Baba as her guru? Or, will she, like Maya, also find her answers at the feet of the Sage of Arunachala?
