About the Book
March to Freedom re-interprets the well-known story of the Indian freedom struggle and anti colonial movement using artworks from our vast, and growing collections. They range from eighteenth and nineteenth century European works that have both artistic merit and historic value. as well as works by Indian artists. One of the most exciting aspects of this exhibition for us is the way in which it puts together works that would never be seen in the same exhibition, let alone the same wall- it is diverse and eclectic, not at all didactic, and seeks to draw in visitors who might have thought both history and art history were stuffy' or 'boring' subjects. Our goal has been to uncover the hidden, or less familiar aspects of a story that many of us know so well that we think that it is a self-evident truth, and seldom pause to reflect on it. Not all of us are interested in the huge body of scholarship that exists about the nationalist movement, Indeed, some of us might hnd it intimidating, and so another goal was to distil at least some of that knowledge into the exhibition and the catalogue, so that non-specialists would find it accessible too. We are thrilled that so many experts were so ready to engage with our collections, and our desire to make the knowledge of both art and history more widely shared and valued. We have planned an exciting programme of events for different audiences, and hope to travel the exhibition too.
