About the Book

In my book entitled Marriage and Womanhood in Contemporary Indian English Novel by Women: A Feminist Approach, I have tried to show how today marriage and womanhood have been depicted in the Indian English novels by women. The issue of women's identity and individualism in the popular institution of marriage has been developed from introduction to that of how the image of women has been built in our society for the benefit of the males. The repetition of our tradition has further emphasized this happening by means of our age old myths and illusions. Hence, I have purposefully represented the different female characters in a variety of modern novels by the authors today. This has depicted the actual change that has occurred in the life of women with the passage of time. However one could find that very little change has practically taken place and that too is only an apparent one. Thus the work shows that the concept of emancipation is still a myth today and it is only the power of patriarchy which is powerful in working through the institution of marriage. In my work I have tried to throw some light to show a path which is still dark for the women in search of their individual identity, the way through which they would be able to attain this individuality even while being in the institution of marriage. It is only by means of creating a feminist space around, that women can achieve their self-identity in marriage. Therefore, while concluding, my work admits that it has only allowed a glimpse of a rich deconstructive and reconstructive process that attempts to cleanse, restore and re-inscribe the inscriptions of personal memories and cultural scripts regarding the women's position and status in the institution of marriage.
