About the Book
This book is an outcome of a study conducted among the widows of alcoholics in a rural village of Tamil Nadu, India. Alcoholism is a vice that is causing chaos around the world. It is well known that the excessive intake of alcohol has several detrimental effects on the body as well as on the mind. This is one of the primary causes of death among men. A vernacular daily newspaper reported that there were 1, 40,686 deaths within a decade in the state of Tamil Nadu due to addiction to alcohol. Moreover, it was also reported that there were 150 young widows as a result of their husband’s death due to alcohol dependence in a remote revenue village in Tamil Nadu. However, when the research team of our university visited the said village, the reality was found to be more shocking. In the said village itself, there were 585 widows who had lost their husband due to addiction to alcohol. This is a shocking revelation that warranted a study as these widows were bound to be in a very miserable state. Widowhood in our country is associated with social stigma and as a result, widows are vulnerable to all kinds of discrimination such as not being allowed to participate in social and other religious events which could make them feel less than human. It may be noted that if this is the type of treatment handed out to all widows in general, those who have lost their husband due to alcohol dependence are bound to be treated even more badly.
