About the Book
The Mudraraksasa, a celebrated play of seven acts by Visakhadatta, describes the subjugation of Raksasa - the de- voted and committed counsellor-minister of the Nandas by a signet ring. So, the play has been designated accordingly- 'मुद्रया परिगृहीतः राक्षसोऽत्रेति' (the compound where the middle member or word is omitted. The text composed on the basis of that is the Mudräräksasa. The title is derived on the strength of Panini's aphorism-'afè w' (Pa. 4.3.87) and falls in the neuter gender. The present play is original due to various reasons such as; a completely political atmosphere, total exclusion of traditional love-tale, depiction of Canakya-the minister as the hero in the place of the king. absence of a heroine, exclusion of a clown, a fresh form of the composition of story, employment of the sentiment of heroism without any blood-shed, absence of the sentiments of love and humour, absence of crass idealism and female characters. The dexterity displayed by the playwright involves mainly the element of continued dynamism. His adroitness lies in the absence of stoppage. The play is unique in the sense that it has been successful throughout in maintaining the curiosity of the readers and audiences. The play maintains its mysteriousness right from the beginning till the end like those of the detective novels.
