About the Book

‘It is a great honour for me to have been chosen by the Supreme Court. I see my role in the BCCI only as a nightwatchman.’ When Vinod Rai humbly commented about his appointment as the head of the Supreme Court-mandated Committee of Administrators (CoA) on national television on 30 January 2017, little did he know that he would stay at the crease for 33 months! In the next few days, the CoA came to grips with their onerous responsibility—that of overseeing the administration of one of the richest sports bodies in the world, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Notwithstanding his ardent support for the game, Rai refused to be blind to the flaws in its governance. And so the nightwatchman decided to play on the front foot; a characteristic style that he carries forward as he describes his innings in Not Just a Nightwatchman. About the Author Vinod Rai was the chairman of the Supreme Court-mandated CoA of the BCCI. He is distinguished visiting research fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies, in National University of Singapore. He is also on the Global Board of Trustees of the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation, London. Starting his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1972, he rose to become the eleventh Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in 2008. He demitted office in May 2013. In 2016, Rai was appointed the first chairman of the newly created Banks Board Bureau (BBB). He has authored Not Just an Accountant: The Diary of the Nation's Conscience Keeper and Rethinking Good Governance: Holding to Account India’s Public Institutions, and has co-edited Seven Decades of Independent India: Ideas and Reflections. Rai was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2016, in recognition of his services to the nation.
