About the Book
Organic farming as an eco-friendly system of agriculture is being practiced in the country as an alternative to the conventional chemical farming. It is considered as one of methods of sustainable agriculture. In recent years Organic Farming Industry has been gaining more attention on the part of policy-makers in our country. The central and state governments have implemented various schemes and projects for the promotion and development of this industry. The awareness on organic farming is slowly pervading among all the spheres of society, including farmers, traders, consumers and policy-makers. Realizing the ill effects of chemical farming, many farmers have switched over to organic style of farming. Due to the high awareness of the health problems caused by the consumption of contaminated food products, large numbers of consumers now prefer to buy organic products. The industry has been performing quite well in the last few years in the State of Kerala. In spite of sincere efforts on the part of central and state governments, the total organic area under cultivation in the State and the number of retail shops dealing with the organic farm products have not shown remarkable progress. The number of consumers who prefer to buy organic products is also limited. At this juncture, the authors through this book attempts to examine the various aspects of organic farming industry from the perspectives of organic farmers and consumers. The book comprises seven chapters, including an introduction and summing up. It is hoped that the book will be useful to entrepreneurs and executives in the organic farming industrial sector, policy-makers, academicians and researchers in the area of Commerce, Economics and Management studies.
