About The Authors: Andrew Stirling (1793? – 1830) was a British civil servant in India, educated at Haileybury, and arrived in India in 1813. He served in various roles, including as Assistant to the Resident in Delhi and as Commissioner’s Secretary in Cuttack until 1828. Stirling’s significant contributions include his account of Orissa and the discovery of the Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves. James Peggs (1793–1850) was a British Baptist missionary in British India, renowned for spreading Christianity. He collaborated with William Bampton in Cuttack, Orissa, where they engaged in evangelism. Peggs’ impactful work, “India’s Cries to British Humanity” (1832), addressed issues such as infanticide, idolatry, Ghau murders, Sati, slavery, and colonization in India. He played a significant role in advocating for stricter measures against Hindu customs, especially Sati, during the British Parliament’s review of the East India Company’s charter.
