About the Book

ISBN 9788180693748 (Series) This is the ninth volume of the Rediscovering Gandhi series of books published by the Concept Publishing Company (P) Ltd., New Delhi originally on behalf of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, but now by the Centre for Gandhi & Peace Studies, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. The series is being edited by Prof. R. P. Misra, a well-known Gandhian scholar, and development planner. The volume consists of 19 articles contributed by scholars from different parts of the country. It has been edited jointly by Prof. Misra and Prof. D. Gopal. The volume centres on the theoretical and applied aspects of Gandhian approach to conflict resolution and peace building in a variety local, national and international contexts. As apparent from the contents, it covers wide-ranging sources of conflicts and the ways and means to resolve them. Among the conflicts covered by the volume are: man and environment, social and economic conflicts arising from iniquitous accessibility and distribution of natural resources, political conflicts within countries like India, Sri Lanka and Timur; and between and among countries. Satyagraha of Gandhi as the most potent means of peaceful resolution of conflicts is the central theme of chapter 4. There are chapters on conflicts resulting from terrorism, power politics, religious animosities and ideological differences. The book covers not only the conflicts and peace building attempts in India, but also in other parts of the world. Some chapters focus on social conflicts in India resulting from the division of Indian society into a unique system of castes. The last two chapters of the book deal with Sri Lankan ethnic conflict and its management and the role UNHCR in peace building in East Timur.
