About the Book

This book promotes understanding of the basics of refractory technology with a true definition and broad classification based on different application areas in ferrous, non-ferrous and other industries. This book contains the understanding of raw materials, refractory design on different laying practices. It provides a complete information on different methods of refractory manufacturing practice, starting from raw material processing to high temperature firing. A comprehensive knowledge captured on different properties of refractory materials, including high temperature corrosion, thermal shock resistance, and their testing methods in laboratories. This book can be used in college courses, as a text -book, as a reference for industry professionals and an introduction to the modern refractory technology for those making the transition to industry. This book serves as a versatile resource appropriate for all levels, from the students to industry professionals. Contents 1 Introduction 2.Refractory raw materials 3 Properties of Refractories 4. Processing of Refractory bricks, shapes and monolithic 5.Different refractory products 6.Refractory application in Iron and steel making 7.Refractories for Re-heating furnaces 8.Application of refractories in non-ferrous industries 9.Application of refractories in other industries About the Author Subir Biswas is former Head of Refractory Technology Group at Tata Steel Ltd, Jamshedpur, India. He had held this position since 2009 and retired from his service on 2020. He graduated in Ceramic Technology from the University of Calcutta, India in 1985 with B.Tech (Ceramic Technology) and joined Carborundum Universal Ltd, India as graduate engineer in R&D centre of super refractory division. He joined Tata Steel Ltd in 1996 and has moved through a number of positions of refractory maintenance and research and development in Iron making and Steel making. Subir was responsible for refractory new product development and technology and selection of refractories, application of modern refractory in steel plants for over 30 years. He has vast experience in development and manufacturing of spinel based refractory, dolomite and low-cement castable in India. He worked on advanced characterisation of refractories, quality assurance and modern installation techniques of refractories in steel plant and he was involved in various expansion projects on refractory installation in commissioning of Blast Furnaces and re-heating furnaces at Tata Steel. A few of his achievements include development of improved quality Dolomite refractory for steel ladles, energy efficient furnace lining, Use of graphene in refractory, cordierite based refractory etc. Subir is a life member of Indian Ceramic Society and Indian Institute of Ceramics and He has 10 numbers of international and more than 25 numbers of national publications to his credit. In recent he has published a book, Subir Biswas, Debasish Sarkar, Introduction to Refractories for Iron and Steelmaking, published by Springer Nature, Switzerland, 2020
