Revolution Within portrays an important phase in the social reform movement of Kerala, during which a major transformation took place in upper-caste, patriarchal Nampudiri brahmana households, initiated by women and the youth, that challenged pre-modern brahmanical moral codes, the gendering process, and modes of reproduction and inheritance. The book also shows how the revolution within the Nampudiri community later merged with overall social change in Kerala. It further argues that this social transformation contributed to the growth of progressive democratic movements in the state and, in the process, helped to highlight the gender question.
