The book Rhododendron of Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalaya: an illustrated account deals with 45 taxa (36 species, 1 subspecies, 1 variety, and 7 natural hybrids) of Rhododendrons found in Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalaya, India. Species are presented with ample photographs of plant habit, habitat, dissected floral parts, identification key, description and notes based on extensive survey and studies. The book takes a historical approach to the taxonomy of Rhododendrons in the Himalaya. This book will be beneficial to students, foresters, researchers, horticulturists, policymakers and those working in the tourism industry.
About the Author: Rajib Gogoi, Scientist E & Head, Botanical Survey of India, SHRC, Gangtok, is a eld botanist specialized in
Plant Taxonomy with major focus in Wild Balsams, Wild Bananas, Rhododendrons, general oristics,
ethnobotany, conservation and is also a Global IUCN Red List Assessor. He has a wide eld experience
working in remote, unexplored areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, etc.
Under his leadership, the documentation of the families for Flora of India Volume 27, to be published by BSI,
is complete. Flora of Sikkim: A Pictorial Guide, published under his leadership, received high acclaim.
Presently, he is working on the ex situ conservation of Rhododendrons and Impatiens, the wild edible
plants of Sikkim, and the ora of Kitam WLS. He is the author of 6 books and about 120 research papers and
has discovered more than 25 species in northeast India. Dr. Gogoi is also a member of the government's
professional bodies for a few research institutes of national importance.
Norbu Sherpa has been working on the inventory and documentation of plants in Darjeeling and Sikkim
Himalaya. He is serving as a scientic assistant in the Botanical Survey of India and is working on plant
taxonomy, especially on the family Balsaminaceae of the Himalaya, the family Hypericaceae,
Rhododendrons and general orsitics of Darjeeling and Sikkim. He has co-authored three books and more
than 15 research articles in various reputed journals.
Dr. Ashiho Asosii Mao, Director, Botanical Survey of India has been leading the apex research institute of
Government of India on Plant taxonomy and conservation. He has worked extensively for the oristic
survey, conservation and documentation of Eastern Himalayan Flora since more than three decades.
He has expertise in micro-propagation of EET species, ex-situ conservation, ethnobotanical studies and
taxonomy of angiosperms. He has documented the Indian Rhododendrons and contributed for taxonomy
and conservation of Orchids in NE India. He has authored more than 150 research articles, 10 books and
completed many in-house and externally funded projects which have resulted in discovery of many taxa
new to science and new distributional records for India. He has supervised ve Ph.D. students and has been
recognized with life membership, many scholarships and awards from National and Internal societies.
He is recipient of Indian Overseas Scholarship, 1990; Schlich Prize, 2010; Dr. S.K. Jain Award, 2012;
Dr. S.P. Vij Memorial Award, 2018, and T.N. Khosoo Memorial Award, 2021.
Dr. Samuel Rai, Ph.D., FPLS, CC Journalism, DCA, Director of Cinchona and Other Medicinal Plants,
West Bengal is an Administrator, Scientist, Extension and Outreach Ofcer among other things. He has
authored 109 scientic papers in national and international journals of repute, 13 chapters in books and 22
articles. Besides this, he has edited 10 books and is currently the editor of a scientic journal ESMERALDA
and a magazine CINCHONA SANDESH. His outreach initiatives include 28 leaets on Agri-Horticulture
and medicinal plants for the farmers. His gamut of experience includes stints as an Agriculture Extension
Scientist in KVK, UBKV in Kalimpong; Senior Scientist, National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong,
Sikkim; Senior Technical Assistant in Regional Plant Resources Centre, Govt. of Orissa. Overseas, he
represented India twice in Japan and Iran on agricultural technology renement, demonstration,
and transfer.
Dr. Subrata Gupta is an IAS ofcer of 1990 batch. Currently he is serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the
Government of West Bengal and is in charge of Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture.
He has extensive administrative experience both at the eld and policy making levels. He has served as the
District Magistrate of various districts in West Bengal. He received MBA degree from the School of Public
Policy in the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom and his PhD degree from IIT, Kharagpur. He has
played a key role in developing greeneld airport at Andal and several other industrial parks. He served as
the Jute Commissioner and later Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles in Government of India. He is
currently empanelled as a Secretary to Government of India. He is a keen sports enthusiast, also interested in
photography and gardening. Being an ardent nature lover, he always insisted development from an
environmental perspective with sustainable scientic interventions. As a nature photographer he roamed in
the Himalayas whenever gets leisure from his work.
