About the Book

This seventh volume details Rajaji’s correspondence from January 1940 to March 1946, which gives an overview of the political climate of the time and the final phase of India’s freedom struggle. It discusses important events in Indian history, such as the Cripps Mission, Quit India movement, deliberations on the Hindu–Muslim settlement, and the elections to the central and provincial legislatures, held between December 1945 and January 1946, for which Rajaji campaigned actively for the Congress. This volume covers a decisive phase of Rajaji’s political journey, detailing his difference with the Indian National Congress on the timing of the Quit India movement as well as on the demand for Pakistan, which resulted in his resignation from the party in 1942, and his subsequent return in 1945. It also discusses his work on matters of national importance, notable among which was the ‘Rajaji/C.R. Formula’, which formed the basis of the Gandhi-Jinnah talks in 1944.
