About the Book
A Socio-Psycho Assessment of suicide is the latest in the field of analytically and empirically grounded discussions of major sociological and psychological issues pertaining to the suicide issues in Sikkim.
Sikkim as a state of India, has opened-up to economic development in recent years with investment in infrastructure and communications technology resulting in rapid social change, which can have a destabilizing impact on the society. Rapid cultural change and erosion of indigenous cultural values and identity through the increasing interconnected-ness that globalization brings with it, seem to be at the root of pervasive feelings of stress and anxiety. Based on both quantitative and qualitative narrative analysis, the book concludes that causal factors of suicides are rooted largely in the social fabric of the society. Although, the subjective experiences vary across individuals, nonetheless, these experiences form a pattern which is shared as inter-subjective experience by many of the victims.
There is a need for short term and long term culturally sensitive interventions at many levels. There is also an urgent need to support and strengthen the initiatives that are already under way. The state as an external agency can play a vital role in addressing socio-economic issues that are largely rooted in social structure.
