About the Book
This North East region of India comprises the adjoining seven sister states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, and the Himalayan state of Sikkim. The social construct of North East India has both historical and social realities. The contemporary North East India is comprised of heterogeneous groups and communities residing in the region. The region has over 220 ethnic groups and dialects. Although there are great ethnic, religious and cultural diversities within these states, they bear many similarities in their social, political and economic spheres.
This book is an attempt to fill up the dearth of literature on sociology of North East India. It analyses the region, its people and problems from sociological point of view. It deals with the region’s brief history, diversities, demography, societies, communities, tribes, polity, economy, education, urbanization, disability, adolescents and youths, status of women, marriage, fertility and family planning, crimes, witch hunting, quality of life, autonomous council, social problems, development, etc. Twenty chapters of the book portray both macro-picture of the region and micro-picture of specific issues. A synthesis of the macro-micro pictures makes the book a composite one. All the chapters have tried to explore the region and its people in a holistic manner. In fact, this book is going to serve the needs of students, researchers, academicians and policy makers concerned with North East region of India.
The present volume, while discussing the issues pertaining to agriculture, decentralisation, displacement, education, forest rights, governance, health and livelihood with reference to scheduled tribes in India, also suggests some policy measures. It covers a range of research areas on tribal studies in the interdisciplinary perspective.
