Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya's Soundarya Lahari, Visual Narratives by Artist H. Jayadeva.The monograph introduces Mysore based Artist Sri. H Jayadeva and his immaculate art works on Soundarya Lahari. Sri Jayadeva belonged to old Mysore Tradition with very much contemporary thinking. He studies in Chamarajendra technical Institute Mysore under legendary art teachers like Sri S.N. Swamy and Y Subrahmanyaraju. He served in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bangalore. Since his young days have been interested in spiritualism and Vedic scriptures, He has been transforming them in beautiful impressive visual narratives on canvases and papers as meaningful art works. Present monograph introduces 67 paintings created based Soundarya Lahari Verses. Sri Shankaracaharya composed this as part of Ananda Lahari in eulogy of Mother Bhavani- Uma-Girija. He has explained the beauty and her various deeds and her almighty powers in his lucid verses. Artist has delineated each verse as one painting. Book consists of 67 plates of paintings done by Artist H. Jayadeva. Besides a lengthy Description about each verse and note in English. There is also a chapter on artist’s biographical notes – Artist H. Jayadeva an artist of Adhyatma Kala. The monograph records the importance of an ancient text and visual narrative which is the result of artist ' sunder standing and imagination of each visual sequence. About the Author: Jayadeva H. (b.1940, Mysore) was a dedicated art teacher. He studied at Chamarajendra Technical Institute under the tutorship of the erstwhile well-known artists and Art Teachers like S.N. Swamy, F.M. Sufi and Y. Subrahmanya Raju were his teachers. He completed five years Certificate Fine Arts Course (1962) and GD Art (1965) from CTI, now known as CAVA. He then joined Kendriya Vidyalaya as an art teacher. He was not only a dedicated art teacher, but also a fine painter. He had received several appreciations and awards from various organizations and institutions during his service. He was also a recipient of an award for his contribution in the field of creative teaching (drawing and painting), from Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi (1994). He started painting at a young age, as a young boy, greatly induced by his elder brother and father. His brother was instrumental in introducing him to the field of Fine Arts, while father, already a renowned philosopher and teacher was an inspiration in Jayadeva's interest in Vedic Literature. With great respect he gives all due credit to his father, who first informed him to create visual images and compositions of the Vedic lore. That initiated his journey in to the visual melodrama of the Vedic LiteraturelikeUpanishads and Adi Shankaracharya's Soundarya and Ananda Laharis. Dr. Raghavendra Rao H Kulkarni, (b. 1968 at Nilogal Village in Koppal District- which is very close to Badami. Dr Kulkarni is a well-known Art Historian, Tutor, Art Writer and Researcher. He did his primary education in his native village and then moved to Mysore for his Art Education. He did BFA in Art History from CAVA, Mysore University, and Masters in Art History from Faculty of Fine Arts. M S University Baroda in 1992. And PhD from Mysore University in 2021. He also did MA in History and Archaeology, and PG Diploma in Epigraphy. He has been contributing research papers to many Art Journals, Felicitation Volumes. He is been teaching Art History since 1992. His main research area is on Karnataka Art and Architecture-especially expertise in Pre and Early Chalukya Sculptures. He has published 7 Books and over 80 research papers. He was also columnist in the new Indian Express, contributes over 30 essays on various aspects of Karnataka Art. His recent works are: Ratna Dipa- Edited Felicitation Volume of Prof. Ratan Parimoo (2021), Chitramantapawall Paintings at Mysore (2022). Dr Kulkarni Published Chitramantapa in 2022. It is his 20 years research and study of Karnataka Painting, (both published by Agam Kala Prakashan, Delhi). He also edited felicitation volume Drishyakala Kamala, essays in honour of Prof. M.J.Kamalakshi, a veteran artist Bangalore, 2023. He was honoured recently by PRCI-Bangalore with National Chanakya Award for his contribution to Art and Architecture for the year 2022.
