About the Book
CONTENTS: Introduction, Rietberg scroll in the Zurich Museum, Pictures and eulogies of (Sudhana's Journey) in accordance with the guidance of Manjusri, Fiftythree illustrations of Avalokitesvara. About the Book: This book illustrates a long-awaited desideratum of the complete depiction of the pilgrimage of Sudhana to fiftyfour kalyanamitras (i.e. half of the auspicious number of 108). This theme was a prime representation of the Gandavyuha the concluding sutra of the Avatamsaka corpus. Its reliefs on the Borobudur (ca 800 AD) and its murals at Tabo are famous as the earlier depictions. At Borobudur, Sudhana pays a rfeturn visit to the 54 kalyanamitras and thus completes the sacred figure of 108. The prfesent volume reproduces the Chinese sketches and eulogies written by the dhyana master Fo-kuo in 1101 AD from a Chinese edition in the RaghuVira collection and a manuscript from the Kyoto National Museum. An incomplete scroll from the Rietberg Museum at Zurich is in colour and it has been reproduced in colour. A parallel text has 53 illustrations of 53 variants of Avalokitsesvara in lasya or graceful style and Sudhana appears in some of them. It is an attempt at syncretism of the Avatamsaka and Avalokitesvara traditions.
