The 2019 Lok Sabha election was a decisive moment and a turning point in West Bengal's recent political history. It may not be the 2011 watershed moment when Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee brought the Left's three-decade-long uninterrupted rule to an end. However, the two moments are most definitely comparable. From being inconsequential to turning into a dominant force - the journey of the Hindu right-wing came full circle in Bengal this LokSabha election. The fish and debate-loving 'Left progressive' Bengali seemed to have finally shifted their loyalty to the BJP. So how did this shift take place and what did it take for the BJP, largely viewed as a 'North-Indian party' to become such a threat in the East? And, most importantly, can the Modi-Amit Shah team defeat Mamata in the 2021 state elections?
