About the Book
The North East India presents an amalgam of numerous tribes and ethnic communities each having their special traits and unique cultural features. In the post-independence phase, cartographic arrangements at the political level have resulted in seven states where the multifarious tribes and ethnic communities have been accommodated. In course of time there have been instances of inter-ethnic discord and strife centering mainly on the issue of territorial rights and share of political power. Interestingly, the literature of the region exhibits these characteristics of the travails of shared existence while simultaneously showcasing ethnic specificities. Fictional works of the North East explore the varied dynamics of inter and intra ethnic relations in which the narratives are inevitably fraught with internal tensions. However, concurrently there is also the endeavour of fictional writers of the region to reach out to the centre, that is, to the Indian mainstream. This process at appropriation reveals a fracture in the narrative from which evolves a distinct trend. The book is an attempt to discern the existence of a distinct North East India narrative different from the mainstream Indian fictional narrative despite the best attempts of the authors to arrive at a sort of synthesis. The ethnic perspective of the North East belies the claims of the selected authors of the study towards any attempts at appropriation. The book endeavours to focus on a new area pertaining to India’s North East which will be helpful to the general readers as well as researchers and scholars interested in North Easst India studies.
