About the Book

Recognising salts nutritional value and utility, the kings of Manipur used to maintain the salf springs, and the produced salf from the springs was used as the source of stae income. As Salt was considered a valuable item, the rulers had appointed a person for the sole purpose of looking after matters related to salt. He was called Thummmmmmmmpurel (official in charge of salt). The writing of the manuscript Thumkhonglon and Ningthourol Khuding Thumkhong Gi itself was proof that salt was a very valuable resource for the Kingdom. The erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur, though small in size and population with a beautiful landscape possessed many salt springs. The presence of many salt springs in the region resulted in the development of a rich tradition of salt-making in this land. Salt History of Manipur; Epigraphical Records of Salt and Manipuri Society; Status of Brine Springs and Salt Producers. The book also includes two ancient Manipuri manuscripts on Salt as annexures.
