About the Book

The dissertation has been divided into four chapters besides introduction and conclusion. Chapter-1 titled “British Occupation of Odisha and aftermath social discontentment’’ is an attempt trace the main trends of political development of Odisha leading to the discontent and frustration among the various people among the society by the British economic policy in general and its impact has been analysed. Chapter-II deals with “Peasant unrest in Odisha’’. In this chapter British policy of exploitation , the relationship between the landlords and the tenants have been analysed. The growth of consciousness among the peasants leading to the formation of Kishan Sabha peasants discontentment and their resistance have also been dealt with. Chapter-III bears the title “women’s upheaval in freedom struggle in Odisha’’ and deals with the participation of women in the freedom struggle by breaking the seclusion in the society and marched from point to point with men for attainment of swaraj. Chapter-IV titled “Harijan and students Movement in Odisha’’ is an attempt to analyse the social problems and the growth of the social consciousness among the Harijans downtrodden and the destitudes. Emphasis has been laid upon the Gandhi’s Padayatra and its repercation on the constructive work on the society. The chapter also deals with the participation of students in the freedom struggle through formation of Banara sena, raising the slogan of anti colonial rule. In the last chapter some concluding observations have been made based on the facts analysed in the preceding chapters.
