About the Book
My Indian painting journey has its genesis in a 1976 research trip to Badrinath. Since that initial visit to India. I have explored many parts of the country and recorded my fascination with its rich and varied landscape in numerous sketches. Some of these became the basis for painting included in subsequent exhibitions on various themes. Among the many places of the subcontinent the i have visited, Udaipur's romantic atmosphere enraptured my soul and ignited my imagination and has called me back repeatedly since my first visit in 2004. Rajasthan's Udaipur region is an artist's paradise. I first met Dr. Pushpendra Singh Ranawat more than a decade ago. It wasn't until 2018 when we spent time together on Machala Hill, however that the idea of inviting him to work with me on a collaborative project focusing on Udaipur emerged. Thought retired and free from the constraints of academic life, we both continue to be active researchers in our respective fields, his geology and mine cultural geography. After i returned to Canada, a frequent exchange of ideas through email ensued as i turned my Udaipur sketches into finished paintings and we shared our textural responses to them. We were reunited in the spring of 2019 and had a grand time together visiting possible sites to be added to the painting list, with Dr. Pushpendra providing much valuable information for which I am most grateful. The landscape provided a classroom in which i could learn about this ancient, vibrant city in its cultural, geographical and geological setting. Rendering the landscape in watercolour provided a conduit through which i could record my observations and emotional responses to them. In turn, the painting afforded an opportunity for the native Udaipur academic to share his distinctive interpretations. Together we created Udaipur Seen and unseen.
